About the artwork:

Richard Tennant Cooper was a British artist whose work uniquely bridged the realms of medical illustration and surrealism, creating haunting depictions of human suffering and disease. His paintings often explored the physical and psychological toll of illness, sometimes portraying diseases as grotesque, anthropomorphic entities attacking their victims. Cooper's background as a medical illustrator during the early 20th century, including his experiences during World War I, deeply influenced his art, leading to pieces that viscerally conveyed the horrors of human frailty. His use of dark, unsettling imagery—such as skeletal figures, distorted anatomy, and surreal dreamscapes—reflected both the medical realities of his time and broader existential fears. Cooper's work stands out as a commentary on the fragility of life in an era marked by medical advancements and the trauma of global conflict, blending scientific observation with artistic imagination to evoke a deep emotional response.

  • Title A Ghostly Skeleton Trying to Strangle a Sick Child; Representing Diphtheria
  • Artist Richard Tennant Cooper (British, 1885-1957; educated at Tonbridge, trained as an artist in Paris before WWI; joined the British Army in 1914, transferred to the Royal Engineers in 1916, worked on camouflage with Solomon J. Solomon RA and was official war artist for The Graphic; after the war he became a successful graphic artist particularly known for his London Underground posters)
  • Year of creation c. 1912 (one of several paintings commissioned by Henry S. Wellcome around 1912 from Richard Cooper, who was then working in Paris. Diphtheria was known as the "strangling angel" for the horrible suffocating symptoms it caused in its child victims — the disease forms thick white pseudo-membranes in the throat that can prevent breathing. Cooper personifies the disease as a ghostly skeleton looming over a sleeping child, strangling her with both hands as she weakly tries to push it away; a cat sits alert beside the bed and a doll has fallen to the floor)
  • Technique/Medium Watercolour with gouache and pencil on paper
  • Original dimensions Not specifically published by the Wellcome Collection for this work; comparable paintings from the same Cooper-Wellcome commission measure approximately 52 x 37 cm
  • Collection/Museum Wellcome Collection, London (reference 24006i; copyright assigned by the artist to the Wellcome organization)
