About the artwork:

Ivan Aivazovsky, a master of Romantic seascapes, is renowned for his breathtaking depictions of the sea's dynamic and emotive power. Born in 1817 in Feodosia, Crimea, his works often explore the interplay of light and water, capturing the sublime and transient nature of maritime landscapes. Aivazovsky's technical mastery is evident in his ability to render intricate details of waves, storms, and shipwrecks, while his use of dramatic contrasts between light and shadow evokes an ethereal, almost otherworldly quality. Paintings like "The Ninth Wave" embody the Romantic ideals of human vulnerability against the immense forces of nature, while simultaneously offering glimmers of hope and resilience. His prolific career produced over 6,000 works, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest marine painters in art history, whose influence resonates in both European and Russian art traditions.

  • Title Jesus Walking on Water (Хождение по водам; also given as Walking on Water or Christ Walking on the Water)
  • Artist Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (born Hovhannes Aivazian, Армянский художник / Russian marine painter of Armenian descent; Feodosia, Crimea, 29 July 1817 - Feodosia, 2 May 1900)
  • Year of creation 1863 (Aivazovsky was a deeply religious painter who repeatedly returned to biblical and New Testament subjects throughout his career, alongside his more famous marine and storm pictures. The subject — drawn from Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:16-21 — depicts the miracle in which Christ walks across the stormy Sea of Galilee toward the disciples' boat, and Peter, stepping out in faith to join him, begins to sink and is caught by Christ's outstretched hand. Aivazovsky concentrates the scene around the figure of Jesus as the compositional and symbolic centre, his face, hands and drapery rendered with the most detail and the most dynamic colour, while the disciples in the boat are barely outlined in dark colour, the painter applying his characteristic principle of subordinating supporting figures to a single dramatic incident. As in nearly all his religious paintings, the surging sea — usually a dark stormy expanse cut through by a beam of luminous moonlight or supernatural radiance around the figure of Christ — occupies the dominant compositional and emotional weight of the canvas, reflecting Aivazovsky's lifelong vocation as a marine painter. The 1863 painting belongs to the first period of his religious cycle, antedating the slightly better-documented later versions of 1888 and 1890)
