Painted in the aftermath of France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and during the tensions of the Dreyfus Affair, the work appealed directly to a generation of young French students, presenting duty, courage, and self-sacrifice as moral ideals. Weerts’ dramatic academic style heightens the emotional force of the scene, while the parallel between soldier and Christ anticipates imagery that would later become common in memorials to the dead of the First World War.
