- Title Expulsion of Adam and Eve
- Artist John Faed (Scottish, 1820-1902; R.S.A.)
- Year of creation c. 1880s (signed lower left: "JJF.aed" with JF in monogram; John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost was the principal literary source — the archangel Michael directs Adam and Eve away from the lush gardens and heavenly radiance of Eden, while Satan in the form of a snake appears in the right foreground. Unusually, Faed shows Michael brandishing a compass — an instrument traditionally employed by God the Father in his act of creating the world — rather than the fiery sword prescribed in both Genesis and Paradise Lost. Faed's renewed interest in religious art led him to visit Palestine in 1857)
- Technique/Medium Oil on fabric (canvas)
- Original dimensions 91.3 x 70.7 cm
- Collection/Museum The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio (Bequest of Noah L. Butkin, 1980; accession no. 1980.258)
