  • Year of creation 1915 (monogrammed lower left "A.J."; from Jawlensky's celebrated "Variations" series, which he produced from 1914 to 1921 in St. Prex, Switzerland, where he had taken refuge as a Russian citizen in exile during World War I. The Variations are obsessive interpretations of the view from his window — a narrow garden path leading to a gate along a wall — increasingly reduced to round and oval planes of color under the influence of Robert Delaunay and the French Cubists.
