  • Artist Giovanni Paolo Panini (Italian Baroque, born Piacenza 1691 - died Rome 1765; veduta and capriccio painter trained by the Bibiena perspectivists)
  • Year of creation 1758 (signed and dated lower left: "I Paul Panini Romae 1758"; third and final version of the composition. Commissioned around 1758 by Claude-François Rogier de Beaufort-Montboissier, Abbé de Canillac, who was in charge of French affairs in Rome and a friend and protector of the painter; it is the pendant to Gallery of Views of Modern Rome [Louvre RF 1944 22, signed 1759]. The composition derives from a first version commissioned in 1754 by the Duke of Choiseul, now in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart [Ancient Rome, 169 x 227 cm]. The painting depicts an imaginary picture gallery with framed views of the most significant architectural sites and sculptures of antiquity — the Colosseum, the Pantheon, triumphal arches — interspersed with classical statues, all studied and discussed by elegantly dressed figures)
