The composition derives from a first version commissioned in 1754 by the Duke of Choiseul, now in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart [Ancient Rome, 169 x 227 cm]. The painting depicts an imaginary picture gallery with framed views of the most significant architectural sites and sculptures of antiquity — the Colosseum, the Pantheon, triumphal arches — interspersed with classical statues, all studied and discussed by elegantly dressed figures)
