- Title Ghosts on a Tree (Gespenster auf einem Baum / Gespenster auf dem Baum)
- Artist Franz Sedlacek (Austrian, born Breslau [Wrocław] 21 January 1891 - missing/presumed dead Toruń 1945; key figure of Austrian New Objectivity [Neue Sachlichkeit] and Magical Realism)
- Year of creation 1933 (one of Sedlacek's most iconic eerie images: hooded ghostly figures perched like vultures on the leafless branches of a tree in a pastoral landscape — souls in torment overlooking the disturbing world of interwar Austria. Sedlacek, who fought at the Galicia and Isonzo fronts in WWI and worked as a chemist at the Technical Museum of Vienna while painting in his spare time, was awarded the Austrian State Prize for painting in this same year, 1933 — the first of three such awards [1933, 1935, 1937]. He later joined the Wehrmacht in 1939 and went missing during the battle for Toruń Fortress in early 1945; he was declared missing on 1 February 1945 and pronounced dead in 1972)
- Technique/Medium Oil on wood (Öl auf Holz)
- Original dimensions 65 x 55 cm
- Collection/Museum Albertina, Vienna (Batliner Collection, Room 5; previously on loan from collector Ernst Ploil)
