About the artwork:

"Girl with a Pearl Earring," painted by Johannes Vermeer around 1665, is an iconic and captivating masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age. This exquisite work depicts a young girl, turned over her shoulder to gaze at the viewer, her lips slightly parted as if she's about to speak. The focal point of the painting, the luminescent pearl earring, contrasts starkly with the deep shadows and soft light that caress her face, showcasing Vermeer's masterful use of light to create depth and emotion. The girl's enigmatic expression, combined with the simplicity and purity of the composition, has intrigued and mesmerized viewers for centuries. Often referred to as the "Mona Lisa of the North," this painting is celebrated for its exquisite detail, emotional depth, and the mystery surrounding the identity of its subject.

  • Title Girl with a Pearl Earring (Meisje met de parel)
  • Artist Johannes Vermeer (Jan Vermeer; Dutch Golden Age painter, Delft 1632-1675)
  • Year of creation c. 1665 (the painting bears the signature "IVMeer" but no date; Vermeer's most famous work and one of the most celebrated paintings worldwide. It is not a portrait but a tronie — the Dutch 17th-century description of a "head" depicting an idealized face or exaggerated expression with exotic trappings, here the turban and the improbably large pearl earring. The pearl is too large to be real and is probably imitation, painted with just two strokes of white paint — one at the bottom to reflect the collar and a thick dab at the top, with no silver hook. Provenance possibly traceable to Pieter Claesz van Ruijven in Delft before 1674. Forgotten and badly neglected until it appeared at auction at the Venduhuis der Notarissen in The Hague in 1881, where it was recognized as a Vermeer by the cultural official Victor de Stuers and acquired by his friend A.A. des Tombe for 2.30 guilders. Selected in 2006 by the Dutch public as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands)
  • Technique/Medium Oil on canvas

  • Collection/Museum Mauritshuis (Royal Picture Gallery), The Hague (inv. no. 670; bequest of Arnoldus Andries des Tombe, 1903; on loan to the Mauritshuis from 1881)
