About the artwork:

"Hail Mary" by Paul Gauguin, painted in 1891, is an evocative work from his Tahitian period. Gauguin created this painting after traveling to Tahiti, seeking to capture the exotic and spiritual essence of the South Pacific.

The artwork depicts a female figure, likely a Tahitian woman, in a serene pose with a contemplative expression, set against a vibrant, colorful backdrop. The composition is marked by Gauguin's signature bold colors, symbolic use of form, and stylized representation, reflecting his fascination with Tahitian culture and his desire to evoke a sense of primitive purity.

"Hail Mary" exemplifies Gauguin's move away from traditional European art to explore more expressive and abstract forms. The painting blends religious iconography with the artist’s own mystical interpretations, creating a profound and visually striking piece that invites viewers to ponder themes of spirituality and cultural identity.

  • Title Ia Orana Maria (Hail Mary)
  • Artist Paul Gauguin (French, Paris 1848 - Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands 1903)
  • Year of creation 1891 (the first major canvas Gauguin painted after his arrival in Tahiti, where he had traveled seeking a wild tropical paradise free from the constraints of modern society; the painting subtly addresses the tension between his ideal and the reality of French colonial suppression of Polynesian culture by translating a traditional Christian subject into a Polynesian setting. As Gauguin described it in a letter of March 1892: "An angel with yellow wings reveals Mary and Jesus, both Tahitians, to two Tahitian women, nudes dressed in pareus, a sort of cotton cloth printed with flowers that can be draped from the waist. Very somber, mountainous background and flowering trees... a dark violet path and an emerald green foreground, with bananas on the left. I'm rather happy with it." The title in Tahitian is inscribed at the lower left of the painting; "Ia Orana" is a common Tahitian salutation, equivalent to the Archangel Gabriel's greeting to Mary at the Annunciation. Gauguin based much of the composition on a photograph he owned of a bas-relief in the Javanese Buddhist temple of Borobudur)
