About the artwork:

Auguste Raynaud’s La Nuit, painted in 1887, transforms the night into an elegant female personification drifting above a dark coastal landscape. The nude figure moves horizontally across the composition while holding a translucent black veil scattered with golden stars, visually connecting her body with the surrounding sky. Below her, an owl perched on a rocky outcrop reinforces the nocturnal setting and may also suggest vigilance, mystery, and the hidden world that emerges after sunset. Rather than representing night as threatening, Raynaud presents it as a calm, almost supernatural presence, combining academic attention to the human figure with the allegorical imagery increasingly popular in late nineteenth-century European painting. Raynaud was a French painter known primarily for genre scenes and portraits, but La Nuit reveals a more imaginative side of his work. The oil on canvas measures 54 by 81 centimeters and was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1887 as no. 1991, confirming that it was conceived as a significant public work within the artist’s career.
