In The Last Supper, painted in 1896, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret approaches one of Christianity’s most familiar subjects with the precision and physical realism associated with late nineteenth-century Naturalism. Christ occupies the center of the composition, surrounded closely by the apostles, whose varied expressions and gestures emphasize the psychological weight of the moment before his betrayal and crucifixion. Rather than idealizing the scene, Dagnan-Bouveret gives the figures a convincing human presence, using carefully observed faces, restrained color, and controlled light to create a solemn atmosphere. The French artist was known for combining academic technique with naturalistic observation and was among the early painters to use photography as an aid in developing realistic compositions.
