About the artwork:

The Valley of Tears by Gustave Doré is a monumental 1883 oil on canvas that turns Christian consolation into a vast human drama. Inspired by the Gospel of Matthew, the painting shows a crowd of suffering people, including rulers, beggars, children, elders, men, and women, moving through a barren mountain landscape toward the distant figure of Christ carrying the cross. Doré places humanity in the foreground and Christ farther back, making the viewer first confront grief, exhaustion, and social inequality before seeing the possibility of redemption. This structure reflects Doré’s late religious vision, shaped by anxiety, faith, and his fascination with Christ as a source of spiritual rest. Now held at the Petit Palais in Paris, the work measures 413.5 × 627 cm and belongs to Doré’s group of large biblical canvases connected to the Doré Gallery, which found major audiences in London and the United States.
