About the artwork:

Fallen Angels in Hell, also known as The Fallen Angels Entering Pandemonium, draws its subject from Book I of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, where Satan’s defeated legions gather after being cast out of Heaven. Across a vast infernal landscape, countless figures descend through smoke and fire, dwarfed by jagged cliffs, glowing abysses, and monumental architecture. The burning reds and impenetrable shadows transform Hell into an entire ruined cosmos, while the angels’ ordered movement suggests that rebellion has survived defeat and is already preparing to rise again. Exhibited around 1841 and traditionally associated with John Martin, the painting captures the apocalyptic scale, theatrical light, and terrifying grandeur that defined his most celebrated visions, although Tate now lists the work as formerly attributed to him.
