- Title Into the Unknown (Ins Unbekannte)
- Artist Alfred Kubin (Alfred Leopold Isidor Kubin; Austrian Symbolist and Expressionist printmaker, illustrator and writer; Leitmeritz [Litoměřice], Bohemia, 10 April 1877 - Zwickledt near Wernstein am Inn, 20 August 1959; studied at the Munich Academy; author of the novel The Other Side [Die andere Seite, 1909])
- Year of creation 900-1901 (the Leopold Museum dates the work 1900/01, executed when Kubin was about 23-24 years old. Masses of people, seemingly solidifying in the distance, stream calmly and composedly into a huge portal — unaware that the aperture is in fact the wide-open mouth of a monstrous beast with enormous canine teeth. Kubin segments the picture plane with fine pen strokes and his characteristic ink-spray technique. The human masses flowing from the foreground toward the centre of the format — and hence into the jaws of the monster — are depicted in different horizontal illuminations: from the semi-darkness of the foreground, the figures shown only as hazy masses proceed into ever more dazzling light, only to disappear through the partly-lit mouth into the black hole of the throat. The people in the foreground, depicted individually and in detail, talk to each other in a relaxed manner; no trace of suspicion or worry can be detected. The title — chosen by Kubin himself — reveals his deeply black humour and his desire to lead the viewer into his world of metaphors, ambiguities and dreariness. The composition is comparable to Daumier's famous Gargantua of 1831, where people carry wheelbarrows up a ramp to feed the figure of a tyrannically greedy aristocrat. Kubin worked in this period primarily in monochrome with ink wash and pencil, drawing inspiration from Max Klinger, Odilon Redon, and Goya — masters of intaglio printmaking and aquatint whose "velvety" tonal effects he sought to translate into his ink-and-wash drawings)
