The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487–88), painted by a young Michelangelo Buonarroti at around 12 or 13 years old, already reveals the prodigious talent that would later define the Renaissance master. Based on an engraving by Martin Schongauer, the painting depicts Saint Anthony suspended in midair as grotesque demons assault him from all directions. Michelangelo’s interpretation surpasses the original in its sculptural clarity and anatomical precision—hallmarks of his later work—demonstrating an early obsession with the human form and dynamic composition. The surreal, nightmarish creatures showcase his imaginative prowess, while the saint’s calm expression amidst chaos suggests spiritual resilience. This early piece, remarkable for its emotional intensity and technical maturity, foreshadows Michelangelo's lifelong preoccupation with the struggle between flesh and spirit.
